User question: Can you unlock a free 3 laptop?

We’ve had a few queries of late asking if it is possible to ‘unlock’ 3′s free laptops. We can understand why consumers might be interested in this but it really isn’t a concern. With all 3′s laptop packages the mobile broadband functionality is self contained within the USB mobile broadband dongle – a stick, or aerial if you like that plugs into a USB port on the laptop. Because the 3 SIM card is linked to the dongle and not the laptop, only the dongle is locked to the 3 network SIM. The laptop is NOT locked to the network and can be used however you like.

This isn’t the same with some of 3′s competitors’ laptops where the network SIM card goes directly into a slot in the laptop (embedded laptops) - a bit like a mobile phone… so watch out!
